Ministers and raisers collaborate through the CPU Philippine Native Chicken.

A face-to-face seminar on small-scale commercial production of Philippine native chicken was conducted on February 13 and 14, 2023, here at the Knowledge and Development Center at Central Philippine University, Jaro, Iloilo City. This event was attended by almost 50 participants who came from Iloilo and Antique. These raisers came from the church ministers from the Convention Baptist Churches of the Philippines and those from the congregation of Doane Baptist Churches. Pastors Joshua Roy Torrecampo and Alvin Labrador led these groups in connection with this. The urban farmers of Iloilo City, together with Federation President Mhavic Pastolero and Brgy. Captain Rodlen Gallenero, joined in the said event as part of the collaboration between CPU and the Iloilo City government. The agricultural extension workers of Iloilo City Agriculture and Guimaras Provincial Agriculture were also present.

The seminar focused more on improving backyard production towards the semi-commercial scale of production. Dr. Jaime Cabarles Jr, the resource person, focused his discussion on the small-holder basis, having seven hens and a rooster that can easily be raised under backyard conditions. The production scheme, which started with the production of day-old chicks and continued with raising native chickens for the market, was presented during the seminar.

This seminar wielded cooperation among participants with CPU as their point of connection. The role of this University is the source of technology packages and inputs and the market channel of the native chicken ready-for-market. Dr. Cabarles added some techniques for marketing the native chicken to further augment the possible profit from growing this fowl.

The concluded seminar is the second activity as part of the commitment of CPU among the raisers of native chicken. The next will be experiential learning, where the participants will be immersed directly in the actual operation of the farm. This undertaking will complete the learning process needed by raisers to commercialize their production.
